In the Department of Conservation rainforest reserve, visitors to Morere Hot Springs can enjoy a great wilderness experience on the network of walking tracks ranging from easy 20-minute walks to challenging two and three hour hikes.
Nikau Pools Track
A 15 minute walk to the Nikau Pools and back. The walk is through lush stands of nikau palms and alongside the Mangakawa stream.
Nikau Loop Track – 25 minutes
The track is well signposted within the reserve. An easy track through varied lowland forest. This track is suitable for family groups and useable in all but the worst weather. A small climb through the rainforest and a return via the Nikau Pools. The track emerges on the Mangakawa Track. Allow 25 minutes.
Mangakawa Track – 2.5 hours
The track is well signposted within the reserve. A challenging track suitable for fit walkers. The Department of Conservation upgraded another section of the Mangakawa track last summer. This two hour bush walk through virgin rainforest must rank among the most diverse and beautiful of New Zealand’s short bushwalks. Wear sturdy footwear. The track follows the Mangakawa Stream with views of waterfalls and small gorges. The track leads back to the Nikau Loop Track. Allow 2.5 hours
Ridge Track – 2.0 hours
This is a demanding hike which leads between the Nikau Loop Track and the Mangakawa Track. It climbs through tall forest to a ridge covered in black beech, lancewood and mingimingi with clearings offering pleasant views over the forest and farmland hills beyond. There are views down the valley to the sea and a short branch track to the Morere cemetery with its old graves. Allow 2.0 hours
